Fragile Hope completes main field phase in Pinnevik

After documenting the bay before and during one of the summer’s busiest weekends, Pinnevik Below the Surface is moving into analysis. One final assessment remains before the collected material is developed into a clear evidence base for Lysekil Municipality and local decision makers.
On 1 August, while Håkan Hellström performed in Lysekil, around one hundred boats gathered in Pinnevik.
Below the surface, Fragile Hope founder Joakim Odelberg entered the water to record conditions in the eelgrass meadow. The footage shows anchors, lines and mooring equipment in direct contact with eelgrass, together with visible pressure and disturbance in parts of the meadow.
This was a key stage in Pinnevik Below the Surface. The project was created to document the bay before summer activity reached its highest level, during one of its busiest periods and afterwards.
Through structured underwater fieldwork, photography and film, Fragile Hope has built a body of material showing the eelgrass meadow, the seabed and the pressures that become visible as activity in the bay increases.
No final conclusions are being drawn at this stage. The material will be assessed as a whole once the final assessment has been completed.

Fieldwork in difficult conditions

The work was carried out in difficult and rapidly changing weather.
Strong winds repeatedly narrowed the time available to work safely on and beneath the water. One field day had to be suspended when the wind suddenly rose to around 20 metres per second.
Despite the limited weather windows, Fragile Hope, together with volunteer divers from Dive Team Lysekil and the wider volunteer team, completed the main field phase and secured the material needed for the work ahead.
The result is a direct record of Pinnevik under contrasting levels of summer activity, including conditions that cannot be understood from the shore alone.

Why the eelgrass matters
Eelgrass meadows are among the most important coastal habitats. They provide nursery grounds for fish, stabilise the seabed, help keep the water clear and bind nutrients and carbon.
According to the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, more than 60 per cent of the eelgrass in Bohuslän has disappeared since the 1980s. The estimated loss amounts to around 12,500 hectares, and there has been no general recovery.
“Eelgrass is one of the foundations of a living coastal ecosystem. We now have material that shows what is happening beneath the surface in Pinnevik. The next step is to turn it into a clear and practical basis for Lysekil Municipality to make informed decisions while there is still time to act,” says Joakim Odelberg, founder of Fragile Hope Foundation.
A strong volunteer response
Fragile Hope initiated, organised and coordinated the project. Around that work, volunteer divers from Dive Team Lysekil, photographers, filmmakers working from shore, boat crews and other supporters contributed their professional expertise, boats, equipment, documentation and local knowledge on a voluntary basis. KustNav also supported parts of the wider field effort.
Their combined contribution allowed the team to respond quickly to brief weather windows and carry out the work at the critical moments before and during the concert weekend.
The support was essential to completing the fieldwork at the scale required. It also showed what can be achieved when people choose to place their skills and resources behind a shared purpose.

From fieldwork to municipal decisions
After the final assessment, Fragile Hope will review the observations, photography and film gathered throughout the project.
The findings will then be developed into practical decision support for Lysekil Municipality and local decision makers.
The aim is to strengthen future decisions while effective measures are still possible and before further pressure on the eelgrass meadow becomes more difficult to address.
Those discussions may include how anchoring and mooring are managed, where eelgrass requires stronger protection and how boating, bathing, fishing and public access can continue alongside a living underwater environment.
Pinnevik is used and valued by many people. Its future depends on informed choices that consider the ecosystem beneath the surface while keeping the bay alive and accessible.
The fieldwork has brought the hidden part of Pinnevik into view. The task now is to turn what has been learned into decisions that protect it.
