HOW IT STARTED

Joakim Odelberg, Founder Fragile Hope

The ocean has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up in a small village by the sea in Bohuslän, Sweden, I got my first diving mask at three—before I could even swim. By the age of ten, I had earned my first diving certificate.

In 2006, my life took a turn during a dive trip in Thailand. I encountered a manta ray for the first time—and fell in love with that gentle giant. That moment should’ve been nothing but joy, but when we got back on the boat, someone opened a beer, drank it, and threw the empty can into the sea. I reacted strongly and asked him how he could do something like that after such an amazing experience.

That moment changed me. Right then and there, I knew I needed to do something. Since 2007, I have dedicated my working life to raising awareness, shifting attitudes, and inspiring action for the health of our oceans.

As a film and photojournalist and ocean advocate, I’ve worked alongside some of the world’s leading scientists and conservationists—like Dr. Sylvia Earle’s Mission Blue and Dr. Alex Hearn’s MigraMar. I’ve documented their work and turned their science into stories that resonate. My role has been to bridge the gap between science and people.

Every dive, every film, every story I’ve told has led to this. The Fragile Hope Foundation is the natural next step. It brings together everything I’ve learned, the people I’ve worked with, and the drive that’s kept me going—into one focused mission.

We support scientists restoring damaged areas, advocate for more marine protected zones, and turn their work into stories that move people. Fragile Hope takes action in the field and brings back stories that help others fall in love with the ocean.

For me, it's also about legacy. I want Fragile Hope to keep going, long after I'm gone, carrying the vision forward and nurturing a healthy, living sea.

Meet the team

"Every dive is an opportunity not only to discover but to bring to light the unseen stories of our oceans, the beauty, the challenge, the mystery and the urgency.

When we're diving, surrounded by ocean life, it's hard to grasp that we influence life here too.

When we return, we share these stories in a way that makes people value our oceans more and not take its health for granted."
